The Adventures of the Little Gray Cat and the Flounder

Back around 1970, I drew a little book about the Adventures of the Little Gray Cat, and how she had traveled to the Great University and then become a Botanical Librarian.  It was a one-time little booklet.

A month or so later we moved, and had to buy a refrigerator and stove.  A major investment for us in those days.  So I drew a picture of the Little Gray Cat sitting smugly on top of a refrigerator.

That one cartoon started a series that has run now since 1970, and has cartoons numbering in the thousands.  In recent years, I've started doing them in PowerPoint, using (usually heavily-edited) clip-art or images downloaded from the Web.  This is the root page of the online collection.

Dramatis Personae

The Little Gray Cat (Felix pulla minora)

One of the cleverest of the species of Gray Cats (one of the few that has a Ph.D.), the Little Gray Cat exhibits occasional moments of dimness, (many of which exist only in the fevered imaginations of Flounders), which form the basis of a series of cartoons in which she is the lead character.

The Supuflourous Flounder (Paralyctus supuflourousus)

Her companion is these adventures is The Supuflourous Flounder, a creature prone to literal interpretations of statements (when they provide humor value).  Flounders think of themselves as exceedingly clever, whether this opinion is justified or not.

[OK, this is not a typo; it is "supuflourous", not "superfluous", and is pronounced soo-POO-flur-us, and there is a long, complex, and completely in-joke explanation of how this name came about.  No, the complete answer would only bore you]

Collywobbles (Collywobblus supernumerarius)

The most popular supernumeraries of the cartoon series, these little creatures are characterized by the fact that they easy to draw.  They evolved when Gray Cat had mentioned that the anticipation of some public talk was giving her a case of the collywobbles, so a plate showing these little creatures emerging from a box (to the dismay of the Gray Cat) came about.  They solve our need for assistants, extras, chorus, and other minor parts. 

The Chickens in Gray Cat's Capacious Bag (Gallus gallus domesticus capaciousus)

These creatures are particularly adapted to life in Gray Cat's Capacious Bag.  They live on baguettes wrapped in napkins.  They are responsible for all the problems involving Gray Cat's Capacious Bag.  They are so popular they have their own substory, "Chick Flix". 

The Saber-toothed Gray Cat (Smilodon pulla)

One of Little Gray Cat's progenitors (11mya-0.1mya), this creature is featured in a number of cartoons to explain the behavior of the modern species, whether by genetic disposition or by "genetic memory". 

The Saber-toothed Flounder (Paralyctus technitodontia)

The companion of the Saber-toothed Gray Cat, this creature helped out the Saber-toothed Gray Cat by foraging for food and other necessities of life.

The Cat Towel Dance	What do Gray Cats do for amusement? As with many songs, this started with a couple lines.  I was picking up Bernadette after work, and she called me back to say a radiator in the library had sprung a leak and she was dancing on towels.  So I sang "And the Gray Cats are Dancing on Towels".  By the time I got the car parked and got out, I had the line "throws something absorptive/wherever the floor is" and there was no denying the need to put the rest of the song around it.  This is a second-order parody, in that it is a parody of Allan Sherman's parody of "The Mexican Hat Dance" [The original Allan Sherman line is "They just throw their fedoras/wherever the floor is"]
Green Bits on LAN	The archetypal tale of a mysterious visitor who appears unannounced, makes extravagant demands of the protagonist and then disappears, having effected a life-changing experience, is re-told in the recently published graphic novel, Green Bits on LAN.  Taking its inspiration from the timeless work of Dr. Seuss, this story places two familiar characters in a collection of improbable circumstances and under the typical inflated Seussian headgear.  Overall the graphic design is a triumph of clip art, subtly distorted to serve the twisted needs of the author/illustrator.  Sensitive readers will sympathize with our hero’s slowly succumbing to the cheerfully insistent demands of the mysterious visitor that he try reading Green Bits on LAN.  His resigned response “If you will let me be, I will read them.  You will see” is a prelude to the great literary epiphany that he really does like reading Green Bits on LAN.  The reader closes the book, grateful to escape from the conflict and exhausted by the visual overload of the story. The Cremation of Sam McGee	The epic saga of Sam McGee was first recorded by Robert W. Service.  The story is about a misplaced resident of the Yukon, someone who is never happy with his role in life, but, who in briefly departing it, finds a new realization of the meaning of friendship.  His companion, “Cap”, a very sincere person, is driven by forces of personal integrity to see that Sam McGee’s wishes are fulfilled, and succeeds in this in a measure beyond any expectation. As performed by the Kirtland Street Players.

Download the whole digital collection!  There are currently 851 [or maybe more, if I forget to update this number!] Gray Cat Plates in the Official Gray Cat Digital Collection, and I don't have the time or patience to put every single one of them out as separate Web pages.  The complete collection of individual cartoons and complete stories is a master file in PowerPoint.  If you have broadband Internet, you should find this download (more than 118MB) reasonable; if you have a dial-up modem, it will take a very, very long time, probably around six hours.  Download Now.

The GCMI number is the slide number of the cartoon in the master PowerPoint collection.  What I do is add individual slides at the end of the slide section, and new stories at the beginning of the stories section, so you can find new stuff by finding the last individual cartoon and looking backwards to see cartoons and forwards to see stories.  This chart helps me when I want to decide what plates to put out.  Some plates are meaningful only to us, some are completely incomprehensible except to us, and some just aren't nearly as funny as they seemed when I did them.  So not all of them will ever go out, but more will go out than I currently have published.  Use the above link to download the entire collection if you really need a Gray Cat Plate Fix.  At last count, I have 175 of the 370 individual plates online, plus 7 individual plates from various series, such as "the cookbook series".
